Tatler Pumpkin Contest

By Lauren Trevor

It’s not quite the season for giving, but here at the Tatler we’re feeling generous, so we decided to host a little contest. Every year The Enquirer hosts a “create a turkey” contest. Using their template, anyone can customize their turkey and send it back in. Winners from each age group then receive a prize for their bodacious bird. For our contest, we instead are providing a pumpkin template which is a separate insert in your issue of the Tatler. To enter simply use the template to create your pumpkin and turn it into Ms. Brady in room number 20 with your name printed clearly. All submissions must be school appropriate to be eligible to win. This means no profanity, sexual content, drug use, etc. If you have questions as to whether or not your pumpkin is appropriate see Ms. Brady.  Submissions must be turned in by Monday the 24th. If you have any questions please contact Ms. Brady or a member of the Tatler staff and remember to be creative and have fun!

To help inspire you and provide an idea of what this contest entails, here are some examples from The Enquirer’s create-a-turkey contest:

New Library Hours!

By Isabella Cross

As you all probably heard, the library is now open after school until 5:15. This was started because the students in the Spanish IV class were asked to come up with ideas that would be beneficial to all the students in our school.

The students in this class took notice that some students don’t have resources such as computers or printers at their homes. Now with the library open later, students are able to have access to the computers after school. They also said that it is easier to concentrate on homework in the school environment rather than at home where there are many distractions.

These new hours are now a way for teachers to help students get caught up with missing work because whether or not students like it, teachers can require students to stay after school to complete assignments.

We are hoping to have tutoring available after school as well. We really hope that these new resources will be beneficial for all the students, and we really encourage every student to take advantage of this opportunity.

Cross Country Comes to a Close

By: Andrew Stookey

 It’s the end of the 2014 cross country season, and Lloyd ended it with a bang. Although neither the boys nor girls teams made it to state, they ran one heck of a race.

The girls who ran at regionals on Novermber 1st at Idlewild were senior Kayley Westwood, juniors Micaela Marshall and Amanda Rogers, sophomores Jackie Oshon and Stella Homecilla, freshman Emily Burgheim, and 8th grader Charlotte Hauck. The girls finished 7th out of eight teams with 164 points, right behind Bishop Brossart at 159 points.

 The boys who ran were seniors Addison Bosley, Andrew Stookey, and TJ Bailey, juniors Tyler Breeden and Kyle Davis, sophomore Austin Robbins, and freshman Skyler Vornberger. The boys finished 6th out of twelve teams, with 135 points, right behind Newport Central Catholic at 129 points.

 Out of the teams, boys runners Addison Bosley, Tyler Breeden, and Austin Robbins made it to state at Lexington. Breeden finished 31st, Robbins 44th, and Bosley 52nd. Great job guys, and what a way to end the season!

Diversity at Lloyd

By: Mahfoudh Mohamed & Andrew Stookey

Lloyd is one of the most diverse high schools in Northern Kentucky, second to Holmes High School. We have a 25% minority toll with only 558 people. We have an excellent ESL program with kids learning English faster than ever. Our high minority number is helping us as we’ve received a bronze medal for being one of the top high schools in America.

Our diversity comes in many groups of people as well. We have a high number of African American enrolled students, with 13%. Our Hispanic, Asian, Hawaiian, and American Indian students make up the rest of our minority groups.

With such a diverse student body, Lloyd has extremely good test scores. 10% of the students testing distinguished, and 50% being proficient, which places Lloyd up with some of the top high schools in the state. Lloyd also has on average more students proficient in English than the entire state does.

Lloyd is split fairly even, with 49% of students being male, and 51% female, and contains a total of 558 students, with a 15:1 student to teacher ratio.

All in all, Lloyd is one of the most diverse, proficient high schools in Northern Kentucky, and even the state. With our wide range of student ethnicity, our high test scores, and the extraordinary student to teacher ratio, Lloyd is really one of the best schools in the area.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Grading Scale

By: Emily Phillips

Starbucks: A+
Like stepping into a bubbly girl`s wonderland. It contained just the right amount of pumpkin spice blend, maintaining its integrity while not being overbearing. Slightly expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Biggby: B-
Actually tastes like pumpkin. It’s incredibly rich, and better consumed in small quantities. Rather expensive, but it’s prepared with great care.

McDonald’s: C
Most of the flavoring settled at the bottom, resulting in a rather bland taste. It ended up tasting more like vanilla with nutmeg. Reasonable price compared to big name coffee shops.

Dunkin Donuts: D-
A latte that is almost indescribable (in a bad way). It has an odd pumpkin liquid sugar taste and was rather burnt. The only decent part was the foam. (The Tatler editor disapproves.)

Chef Singleton’s Kitchen

This week in Chef Singleton’s kitchen, my assistant Lauren Trevor and I were feeling a little experimental. Lauren suggested that we make garlic and green onion hamburgers, and that is exactly what we did. Personally, I think they turned out pretty well. Try some and decide for yourselves:

Recipe:
* 1lb hamburger
* 3 garlic cloves
* ½ cup to a cup of chives
* Pinch of salt
* 3-5 pinches of garlic salt
* A pinch of pepper
* Olive oil for skillet preparation
* Buns

Reviews:
“Delicious. Excellent hamburgers.”
“Pretty Tasty.”
“It was definitely a hamburger.”

Helping Hands and Giving Cans

By: Aryan Overstreet and Hayley Osborne

The weather is cooling, but our hearts aren`t. As we approach the holiday season, we should help those in need. Thanksgiving is only two weeks away, and as we are all excited about the delicious foods to come, we have to remember that there are many unfortunate families in our community.

So the Tatler staff will be hosting a canned food drive for those in need. Whichever fifth period class collects the most cans will have a Thanksgiving party courtesy of the Tatler. The party will be held on Tuesday the 25th, and it will consist of food, Thanksgiving fun, and more food.

Think about the families who would appreciate having a nice meal this Thanksgiving; one of the many things we take for granted. Help someone this holiday season by bringing in a can. Bring a can, create a smile, and give thanks

Lloyd Wins a Bronze Medal

By: Mahfoudh Mohamed

If you’re not a frequent reader of U.S. News Education magazine, then you’ve probably missed that Lloyd was considered one of the best high schools in the country, and I repeat… in the country! Lloyd racked up a bronze medal last month.

As stated in the Erlanger City Newsletter “U.S. News chose only 4,707 Schools or 27 percent ‒ as the highest-ranking schools in the nation. Lloyd Memorial High School is on that list”.

Lloyd’s hard work has indeed paid off. Last year Lloyd had 47 students in Advanced Placement classes, with only AP U.S. History and AP Literature offered. This year Lloyd stepped up its game by adding three more AP classes. 181 kids are challenging themselves and taking AP classes this year.

Senior and current AP student Evan Franxman said, “Receiving a bronze medal looks great for the
school and it truly shows the hard work has paid off, and we look better than Dixie”.

IC3 teacher Laura Albrinck feels like the teachers had a great part in this accomplishment; “I feel like I helped with the career readiness of these students, and I am very proud” she added.

Teachers indeed do play a huge part in our accomplishment. 72% of Lloyd’s staff has a master's degree and 36% have earned Rank 1, the highest status in Kentucky. So it’s definitely not just a coincidence that our numbers have topped other Northern Kentucky high schools.

Get to Know Mr. McMillen

By Isabella Cross

Continuing with our introductions to the new teachers at our school, this edition will introduce you to Mr. McMillen. He is an English teacher here at Lloyd for both freshmen and seniors.

This is actually his 14th year teaching. He has taught twelve years at NKU, one year at Dixie, and this is his first year at Lloyd. He loves the environment that Lloyd has. His favorite part about Lloyd is the familiarity he is able to have with his students.

“Since Lloyd is small I am getting to know individual students, not just groups of classes.”

Mr. McMillen grew up in Kentucky, but moved to Plano, Texas in his teenage years. He then came back to Kentucky to obtain his degrees at both EKU and UK.

He is interested in English because of how much people can relate to literature.

“I like literature because we can see a small part of ourselves in the characters of great stories,” he explained.

One of McMillen’s hobbies outside of school includes being there for his two daughters. He coaches his daughters’ sports teams and said, “My girls’ hobbies have become my hobbies.”

We hope that Mr. McMillen has a great first year at Lloyd High School!

Sweet &Fruity vs. Chocolaty

By: Jordan Gentry

From Candy Corn to Butterfingers, Skittles to M&M’s, Twizzlers to Reese Cups, Lifesavers to Tootsie Rolls, and Nerds to Snickers, Halloween candy tops all. With so many options it’s very hard to choose between cravings for sweet and tangy or savory and delicious. As for some Lloyd students here are the results:

Extra Credit Project Teaches Preschoolers

By: Habsa Dia

“It’s wonderful that the older kids are getting involved with the preschoolers,” says preschool teacher Susan Dugan.

All four of Señora Donnell’s Spanish I classes had the opportunity to help the preschoolers with learning a new language. The extra credit project was creating a Spanish alphabet book.

“I thought it would be neat to make picture alphabet books for the children at the daycare,” says Spanish teacher Señora Donnell. Currently the preschoolers are learning letters and doing different activities to help prepare them for kindergarten.

“Right now is actually one of the best times [for them] to learn a new language,” Señora Donnell adds. After the freshmen completed their books, she had them laminated and took them to the teachers to choose the ones they wanted for their classrooms.

“I love it,” Ms. Dugan stated. These books will be the first at this location to introduce another language. Sister corporations have already started teaching Spanish since they have Hispanic parents with an interest in being a part of their classes. As for the preschool at the end of third hall, having the high schoolers help out is a real pleasure.

Is the World Coming to an End?!

By: James Viox

Can one single disease wipe out the entire world population? Ebola, an extremely contagious and deadly disease has been found in the United States. People have, on average, a 50/50 chance of dying from this disease. But what’s the probability of the dead coming back to life? Ebola is not only bringing our world to an end, but now it’s turning us into zombies? The deadly disease is now bringing their victims back to life. In a matter of a couple years we will be living in The Walking Dead (Ebola Edition).

Several people who have acquired Ebola, specifically in Africa, have come back to life momentarily after suffering death. Rumors have it that some of these people have uprooted out of their graves and are on the loose. They’re roaming anywhere and everywhere. So let’s just take that as no one is safe from the disease

Student of African descent, Mahfoudh Mohamed, Junior, states, “Ebola seems to be a very serious topic in America today, back home in Africa, Ebola has been extremely common.”

Mahfoudh also stated, “ I have known several people from my former village who have become victims to this disastrous disease, I would hate to see the same thing happen here.”

Mahfoudh has not been in contact with someone who has resurrected back from the dead, but he has heard of it and wouldn’t be surprised if it happened here in America.

People have believed Ebola will make its biggest strike the day before Halloween. So the day of Halloween the Ebola zombies will resurrect from the dead, making for one scary and realistic Halloween costume. So you might as well forget about Jason, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers because Ebola zombies are far more deadly and horrifying. It is also to be believed that the zombies have a strong craving for candy, so make sure to protect yourself, and your valuable loot of candy this Halloween.

Introducing AP

By Emily Phillips

This year has had some notable improvements to offer students willing to go above and beyond in education. Four new AP classes have been added to student schedules in order to provide and promote the option for early college credits. With this exciting news, teachers of these courses have given their information about the class, and themselves.

AP Statistics: Mrs. Gleason
With a seemingly analytical and realistic viewpoint, her goal for the class is to pass the AP exam. Lessons include “a cycle of teach, practice, review,” as said by Mrs. Gleason.
Biggest Fear: Snakes

AP Literature: Ms. Ludwig
In addition to passing the AP exam, she plans on teaching her students strategy and analytical skills. Classes will be discussion based. When asked if she had any secret plans for this year, Ms. Ludwig responded with, “If I told you, I would have to kill you.”
Biggest Fear: Getting attacked by mice in her classroom.

AP Environmental Science: Mrs. Pleiman
“The goal of APES is for students to understand the connection between how all parts of the living world interact with each other and humans,” as said by Mrs. Pleiman. Using a variety of methods, she prefers a more hands on approach, with tons of labs and activities.
Biggest Fear: Flying in an airplane (ask her for the story)

AP Physics: Mrs. Jump
In her sardonic, witty, and wonderful mind, Mrs. Jump states that, “The main goal of the course, as with any subject, is for the student to have an understanding of the material. In Physics, that understanding will come from labs and practice problems.” Her main method of teaching consists of note taking. Always have a pencil!”
Biggest Fear: That this will be published

Warning For Halloween

By: Lauren Trevor

Before you go out on Halloween to face off against all the monsters and ghouls, make sure you understand what you’re up against! Whether you’re planning on blending in with them or fending them off this Halloween, make sure you know how to recognize one!

One of the most well-known on the list of beasts is the Lycanthrope, or more commonly known as the werewolf. These monsters are known to be created by one of two ways, according to legend. The first is the one everyone knows, the classic transformation into a werewolf as a result of being bitten by one. The second is the less renowned werewolf curse. Ironically, however, this is how the original legend describes one becoming a werewolf.

In the earliest recorded appearance of this creature, a story by Ovid a Roman poet, the first werewolf was King Lycaon, who greatly angered the gods when he served them human meat at a banquet in their honour. As punishment, the gods cursed him and he began to take the shape of a wolf, a more fitting appearance to match his cannibalistic tendencies. In these original tales of the wolf-men, the full moon had nothing to do with the creatures, and in fact, they could change at will at any given time of day or night. As time progressed, however, the tale of the wolf-man evolved into what we know of today, and the legend differs from culture to culture. But in any version it’s true that these beasts are the fearsome kings of the night, so makes sure to stock up on dog treats and squirt bottles unless you’d like to be dinner this coming Halloween!

“Charm & Strange” Book Review

By: Sarah Barron

Everyone has their own secrets that lurk between the shadows. They seem to sneak inside of us. Some people even claim they have a beast living inside of them. Charm & Strange by Stephanie kuehn tells a story about a teenager named Win who is put in a boarding school. Win has several dirty secrets that he tucks away from the world. Win is very anti-social, but the most interesting aspect of all is that he claims there’s a werewolf living inside of him. The two friends he manages to accommodate end up bringing out the worst in him. The truth simply lies within the beholder.

While reading Charm & Strange it allowed me to dig in between the story and the point being portrayed. To me the bigger idea seemed to be that even some of the best people have secrets. We all hide in fear of knowing the absolute truth. Unfortunately it’s as though these secrets receive the best of us as individuals. It is our duty to keep life moving by simply one’s own decision whether or not to tell the truth. So often we are quick to judge others solely based on how they act or look when in reality there’s so much more to it than we could ever understand.

My personal experience with this book was incredible. I enjoyed the overall take of it, and the meaning I received within it. This book was a very simple, easy read. It was a true page turner. Every page would lead you flipping to the next keeping you focused and constantly waiting to know what would happen next. Charm & Strange is a romantic, suspense filled book. Everyone is always saying. “Never judge a book by its cover or even its title”. In this case, I 100% agree with that saying. When I first received the book to read I was weary I wouldn’t enjoy reading it because of the title and cover. As I read the summary I became more and more intrigued and interested in reading the book. With relief, I absolutely loved the book overall.

I would definitely recommend this book. Honestly almost anyone would enjoy the book because of all the topics mentioned. Charm & Strange not only talks about werewolves but also touches on back flashes of a summer romance. Therefore I would not gender base recommending this book. I strongly believe that anyone willing to read the book would be hooked in an instance. It is constructed well, easy to read, and simple to understand. Thus making it the perfect book for anyone to understand and enjoy at the same time.

Chef Singleton’s Kitchen

When you ask people what their favorite holiday is, the answer you receive most often is Christmas. I am not one of those people. I absolutely LOVE Halloween and have loved it ever since I was a kid. So, for this special extra-large Halloween edition of the Tatler, I made the staff a special Halloween treat. I call them, Krispie Candy Corns. Basically, they are your classic Rice Krispie Treats made to look like candy corn using food coloring. The recipe I found put a spin on the standard Rice Krispie treat by adding different flavors to the orange and yellow sections of the candy corn. Having lemon and orange zest added in with the Rice Krispie treats, however, did not sound very appealing to me, so I left it out. I will give you the original recipe though, so you can use it as you please.

Total Ingredients:
* 2 sticks butter
* 2 10-oz bags mini marshmallows
* 2-3 lemons
* Yellow food coloring
* 1 12-oz box Rice Krispie Cereal
* 2 oranges
* Red food coloring

For the yellow ring:
* 3 Tbsps. Butter
* 5 cups mini marshmallows
* 1 Tbsp. lemon zest
* 2 drops yellow food coloring ( I suggest more)
* 4 ½ cups Rice Krispie cereal

For the orange ring:
* 2 Tbsps. Butter
* 2 ½ cups mini marshmallows
* 1 Tbsp. orange zest (from 2 oranges)
* 2 drops yellow food coloring
* 2 drops red food coloring
* 3 ¼ cups Rice Krispie cereal

For white center:
* 2 Tbsp. butter
* 2 ½ cups mini marshmallows
* 2 cups Rice Krispie cereal

Directions:
Grease two 8 inch cake pans and two spatulas with butter or nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
In a large saucepan, start to make the yellow layer: Melt 3 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Add 5 cups miniature marshmallows; stir until melted. Stir in lemon zest and yellow food coloring. Place 4 ½ cups Rice Krispie cereal in a large bowl, then add marshmallow mixture and stir quickly with greased spatula until fully incorporated.
Divide yellow Rice Krispie mixture between two cake pans, and use your hands to create a ring around the inside of the cake pan about 1 ½ inches wide. Rub a bit of butter on your hands as necessary to prevent the mixture from sticking to your hands. Work quickly, as the mixture becomes difficult to manipulate when it cools.
Wash saucepan and spatulas, then repeat the same process with ingredients for the orange ring, and then the white center.
Let sit for two hours (or overnight). Run a small knife around edges of pan and invert loaf onto cutting board. Cut the round in half and then in quarters, then cut each quarter in half.

Reviews:
“Scrumptious” – Isabella Cross
“Delicious” – James Viox
“Really good” – Mahfoudh Mohamed
“Very good” – Brent Christiansen
“Tasty and festive” – Emily Phillips
“Adorable and tasty” – Hayley Osborne
“Cute and delicious” – Aryan Overstreet
“Indescribably good” – Jordan Gentry

Jason, Michael Myers, and Freddy,
Come after you with claws or a machete.
Friday the 13th and Jeepers Creepers,
These movies turn the strongest into weepers.
Bats and Witches fly around the night,
 You won’t be safe if there’s no sunlight.
Vampires prowl on every street,
Your blood isn’t safe if you and one meet.
Killer Clowns are on the loose,
They’ll even frighten your pet moose.
Haunted Houses can’t even compare,
 This night is more frightening than your worst nightmare.
Ghosts are out on a tear,
They’ll steal your candy and not even care.
Overall, Halloween is just plain scary, and please kids don’t forget to drink your dairy.

Playoffs Beginning Means a New Season For The Juggs!

By: Brent Christiansen

The regular season has come to an end for the Lloyd Memorial football team, which means the Juggs are back at 0-0 and ready to show what they got. The team had a very exciting regular season, finishing at a very quality 7-2 record going into the big dance. The high powered offense scored at least 42 points in seven of their nine games, the points being scored by a host of different Juggernauts.

The team finished at third in one of the most competitive districts in the state, finishing at third due to heartbreaking losses to very good district opponents Newcath in week 5 and to Newport this past Friday.

This past week the Juggernauts suffered a loss to the Newport Wildcats at Newport, however they did put together many great drives and good stands of defense. From this loss the Juggs are even more motivated going into the playoffs and know what they need to work on to make a run to winning the state title.

Going into the playoffs Loyd has a bye week before going into their first round matchup against the second place finisher in the 2A District 5, which at this point looks to be against Carroll County, whom the team did not play during the regular season.

Nonetheless, the Juggernauts are ready to rally together and get things right before their first playoff bout which is on November 7th and will be an away game due to the fact the Juggernauts lost home field advantage after their loss on Friday.

Everybody get ready to cheer extra loud for the Juggernauts as they try to make their run for a state title…GO JUGGS!!!!

Who’s Ferguson?

By Emily Phillips

Many of you have probably noticed the bearded man at the beginning of first hall, but do you actually know him? After interviewing Tim Ferguson, one of the newest members of the science department, I have come to understand that he is just the type of quirky character that Lloyd needs. Musically talented, and an avid comic book collector, Mr. Ferguson is way more than meets the eye.

Starting out as a Skyline employee, Ferguson then advanced to tutoring and banking before landing a job at Conner High School.

“Working in food, in my opinion, should be a requirement for everyone. It teaches humility and how to deal with complaints,” explained Ferguson

Five years after dealing with Conner, he decided that Lloyd was the place for him. With no particular reason for becoming a Juggernaut, Ferguson has shared that he is quite content with our “unique” vibe and appreciates the friendliness and accessibility in which he receives.

“I LOVE what I teach (science). It’s such a great way to look at and understand the world around us.”-Ferguson

With such a passion for his career, Ferguson seems to have only one major complaint: grading papers.

“Not because of the quality of the work that I get, but because I find myself so busy preparing for lessons and actually teaching, student work stacks up and I get overwhelmed,” said Ferguson

This reminds us that teachers have just as a hard of a time as we do.

Outside of school, Ferguson is a part-time employee at his church, Immanuel United Methodist Church. He leads music on Sunday mornings, and he even helps out with the youth group on Sunday nights. I was also proud to learn that he collects/reads comics, sings, and plays numerous musical instruments including the guitar, banjo, and mandolin.

As an added bonus for my interview, I have been able to uncover the reason for his infamous beard.

“The beard is the result of necessity and laziness. Necessity because it keeps my face warm and laziness because I don’t have to shave. In previous years, I’d grow it out in the fall/winter and shave in the summer, but this summer I decided to keep it and see how long I can grow it before my wife makes me shave it. So far so good! I have noticed a lot of attention about my beard. As a person who has one, this has fascinated me. I get a lot of questions about it and I’m happy to answer them,” explained Ferguson.

Tough Loss Propels Lloyd Football Forward

By: Brent Christiansen

This past week, the Juggernauts suffered their first loss of the season after beginning the season a tremendous 4-0. The strong Lloyd team knocked off Gallatin County to push their winning streak to four on homecoming night before suffering their first loss of the season to an always strong Newport Central Catholic team.

The Lloyd team had an extremely strong showing against a large Gallatin County team, winning with a final score of 44-12. The Juggernauts were on a role offensively, giving the ball out to all its playmakers and pumping out big play after big play. Senior Hayden Molitor and Sophomore Lashunn Townsend each had long touchdowns in the first quarter, along with Sophomore running back Justin Durham pounding in one from close after another long run by Townsend. Junior wide receiver Charles Gaines had over 80 yards receiving, helping move the Juggernauts down the field through the air. History was also made this night in the kicking game when Senior kicker Sergio Gutierrez beat the field goal record by hammering in a staggering 49 yarder.

The next week verse Newcath did not quite go as planned for the Juggs. Despite great plays by some Lloyd playmakers, such as receivers Charles Gaines and Zack Riddle, mental mistakes killed Lloyd, with the game ending in a deceiving score of 28-0. The game was highly contested compared to past years and was a tough game for both teams.

Despite this loss the Juggs are still sitting at an outstanding 4-1 record. The team propelled by this loss and is eager to show what it can do in the remaining district matchups against Newport, Bishop Brossart, and Holy Cross, who they play this Friday for senior night. Come out and support Lloyd in this always entertaining game. GO JUGGS!!

Chef Singleton’s Kitchen

By Sarah Singleton

Welcome ladies and gentlecats, to the first edition of Chef Singleton’s kitchen! In each new edition of the Tatler, I will be finding and trying new recipes and giving you reviews on them. This week, I decided to make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies. I had made these cookies once before, and everyone loved them. So, I decided to make them once again for myself, and the rest of the Tatler staff. The recipe is as follows and makes 2 dozen cookies:

Ingredients:
* 1 cup canned pumpkin
* 1 cup white sugar
* ½ cup of vegetable oil
* 1 egg
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* ½ teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon milk
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
* 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Combine pumpkin, sugar, vegetable oil, and egg. In a separate bowl, stir together flour baking powder, ground cinnamon, and salt. Dissolve baking soda with the milk and stir in. Add flour mixture to pumpkin mixture and mix well.

2. Add vanilla, and chocolate chips. (Make sure you have enough chocolate chips for however many batches you are making. I only had 1 cup of them for the Tatler staff’s batch, sorry guys)

3. Drop by spoonful on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 10 minutes.

Reviews:

“Tasty.” – Isabella Cross

“Eating it is like being impregnated by the giant celestial alien god of love and affection.” – Lauren Trevor

IHOP Gives Gift of the Centuries

By: Alex Mahoney

Have you ever heard the age old question, pancakes or waffles? While others bicker over which is better, let’s all just agree that those who chose the buttermilk pancakes from the great land of IHOP are the greatest amongst all choices.

While some people would argue with me and say that the worst possible thing is pancakes, let alone ones from IHOP, we can all agree that they have no idea what they’re talking about.

Waffles have crevices in them that inverts inward for what? To hold the butter or syrup some people may like to use on them, it is completely and utterly disgusting. The pancakes have the fluff and fullness that a breakfast or to some a dinner food may have.

Waffles are just lies that you can easily poke holes through them and their stories, nothing about them is enjoyable, you get a crunch that can disgust you thoroughly if you’re looking for a fluffy, bite of a cloud. The pancakes have always been the right choice, nothing has ever been able to compete.

So let me ask you, would you rather take a bite from a stale cracker, or a bite from a heavenly cloud?

Artist Spotlight

By Lauren Trevor

This past September a number of talented artists participated in ComicCon. One of those artists is a current student of good ole Lloyd Memorial. Known by several different aliases, like Fox and Ink, senior Makenna Baughman has truly made a name for herself around Lloyd’s art world. Drawing for as long as she can remember, her art style has developed and become unique. She says that she first began drawing dinos, but today, she enjoys drawing fantasy, with a particular interest in the old folk lore of the werewolf. As for media, she says that she prefers digital artwork, but does paint and sculpt on occasion.

When asked if she planned to continue and create a career from her skills, she tells us that she would like to become a concept artist – an artist who designs and creates concepts of characters for movies, comics, et cetera.

“If you want to be an artist never give up and do get out of your comfort zone sometimes,” she advised aspiring artists.

If you fancy her art, check out her page at ink-aroo.deviantart.com.

Rewards Program

By Habsa Dia

This year Student Council wants to award students with relaxing and fun activities. All you have to do is have good behavior and academic excellance. At the end of each semester this year, any student who meets the requirements will be rewarded. The permitted requirements are as follow:

- As, Bs, and Cs in all subjects

-Either one unexcused absence OR one tardy to school

-Two tardies to class

-One minor referral, such as insubordination, cell phones, etc.

-No major referrals

If you aren’t eligible for rewards this semester, you have another chance to participate during next semester. The current ideas for rewards are going out to the movies, going bowling, and going to the park for part of the day. If you have any suggestions for rewards that you would like to do, talk with your Student Council class representative for it to be discussed.

Lounging Around!

By: Andrew Stookey

Are you sick of the dirty, loud cafeteria? Are you finally getting annoyed by the freshmen acting immature and clapping every time something happens, such as someone dropping their tray or a three second fight? Need a new, hip place to hang out with your friends during lunch? Well, I have good news for you!

The student lounge was created last year by students themselves, including yours truly. It features many exciting resources, and is sure to make your lunch period better! All it takes is a special requirement, such as being a fall athlete or being on the honor roll.

Are you a fan of sports? Because if you are, then the student lounge is for you! Ping pong tables and a foosball table for your entertainment! Want to just sit around like the lazy bum you are? There are couches and chairs, and for the true homeless experience of all, there are benches!

According to the students, the lounge is fabulous.

“It’s never crowded, and definitely fun. It’s a nice break from all the kids in the cafeteria,” says junior Jakob Turner.

Finally, the most important thing of all…… Are you ready? Microwaves! Yup, two of them. You can now cook Ramen at school and chill in an environment made for people of your higher status.

This is the student lounge, and remember, what happens in the lounge, stays in the lounge. Welcome home.

Goldstar vs. Skyline

By: Aryan Overstreet and Hayley Osbourne

Unless you`re Mrs. Lawson, you crave the taste for Cincinnati chili. There are many different factors that play into the perfect chili restaurant. The question of whether Skyline or Goldstar is better is constantly left lingering. Some of us are true advocates for one, but others ride the fence between the two. Some of deciding factors are:

Skyline`s runny, spicy chili, harder buns, and baby fries
along with
Goldstar`s sweeter chili, bigger fries, smiley face cookies, fresher cheese, and phenomenal milkshakes.

Feedback from our peers:

“It`s not even a question” a true skyline lover, Jesse McLean.

“Skyline shouldn`t even be in the picture” Anthony Wilson.

“That`s easy: Goldstar.” Stookey

“I`m not allowed to answer” younger Stookey.

“Skyline 3-ways, Goldstar conies” the fence rider, James Henry Viox X

“Chili supreme level (skyline)” Brent Michael Christensen I

“Skyline because I`ve never eaten at Goldstar” Habsa Dia

“Gold Star, once you really try it, it's hard to go back.” Anonymous

“The only reason I`m dating my boyfriend is because his parents own a Goldstar” Gwen Watson. #squad

Apparently the question will continue to linger in our minds. Personally we believe that everyone who prefers Skyline needs new taste buds, but that isn`t “none of our business”.

Seniors Go Out With a Bang on Senior Night!

By: Brent Christiansen

Another fall sports season is beginning to wrap up and that means saying goodbye to another group of senior Jugg’s, and this group was a good one. While the senior football class leaving was is one of the smallest in recent years, it is a quality group made up of several three year starters in Quarterback Hayden Molitor, Receiver Zack Riddle, Linemen Bryan Larkin and Brent Christiansen, and Kicker Sergio Gutierrez, along with first year players Trevor Butts, Desmond Harris, and Jaquan Evans, all influential to the team in their respective ways.

After a three year battle of losing senior nights, this year was a complete difference. The team, led by senior leadership, and underclassmen trying to get their senior teammates one last win, stomped out the Holy Cross Indians in what is usually a much closer contest, with the final score ending up 50 to 20. In the blowout Senior Quarterback led an energized Lloyd offensive attack racking up 194 yards, and 4 touchdowns, one of the touchdowns going to Senior Receiver Zack Riddle. Junior Receiver Charles Gaines, Sophomore Running Back/Receiver Lashunn Townsend, Junior Running Back Brad Creech, and Sophomore Running Back Justin Durham all also had good games, each posting a touchdown, which is just a testament to how bright the future is for the Juggs. Seniors Brent Christiansen and Bryan Larkin led the strong Juggernaut line, along with fellow lineman Andrew Wallace, Andrew Fields, Zack Clark, and Center Jakob Turner snapping.

This past Saturday the Juggs thrashed a Bishop Brossart team which came out surprisingly strong, ending with a final score of 49 to 28. Sophomore Running Back Justin Durham’s performance was the story of the day, ending with a final total of 234 rushing yards, and 4 touchdowns. His rushing efforts were simply unstoppable as the stat sheet shows. Junior D1-bound Receiver Charles Gaines also had a good day, giving a toss to Durham for one of the touchdowns, as well as having a tremendous catch for a touchdown.

One Last Home stand

By: James Viox

Last Thursday night The Lady Juggernauts took their home court one last time for the season. For most of the athletes on the volleyball team they will be able to encounter more home games in their future high school career, but for Payton Brown (Senior) this was her last go around.

Payton has played all 4 years for the Jugg’s and she was left a tough battle for her last home game against the Dixie Colonels. Not only are the colonels a very talented team, but this game was also a district game which rose the stakes even more. The Colonels came out red hot in the first set, but the Juggernauts were able to match up against them. Eventually the colonels were able to power past the Jugg’s and take the first set, but that didn’t hold them down. The Jugg’s were hungry after the first set defeat and came out ready to play in the second set. The Juggernauts needed only 4 more points to even the game at one set apiece, but slipped at the end and allowed the colonels to take another set. One more set remains and the Juggernauts were feeling defeat approaching quickly. The Colonels came out once again, but this time they were ready to end it. The Juggernauts tried their best, but Dixie’s Height and experience advantage was too much for the young Juggernaut team.

After the game, senior, Payton Brown states, “It’s been a long ride, but it was worth it. I love the game and couldn’t imagine not playing. I’m really going to miss my teammates and playing by them every game. They’ve really helped me improve my skills and we`re just a great group of encouraging and uplifting girls. It’s really bittersweet that I’m playing my last home game tonight, but I’m extremely grateful for the memories and experiences that I’ve made”.

Special Effects Look For Under $50

By Emily Phillips

Tired of using oatmeal to create a chunky, bloodlike wound for Halloween? Want something that looks more like the real deal? Most items for crafting a believable cut, wound, or gash can be found at local Halloween stores, home, or (my personal favorite place for materials) the Theatre House in Covington. Become a ghoul this holiday by following this guide to special effect stardom.

Materials (Price may vary with quality and quantity):
-Scar/Nose wax: $7-16
-Rigid Collodion (or just regular collodion): $8
-Paints (red, black, blue, etc.): $8
-Popsicle sticks: $3
-Q-tips: $1-2
-Fake blood: $5-7
-Paint brushes (small, childlike ones): $3
-Liquid latex: $3

Even if you haven’t heard of some of these materials, they are actually quite accessible. Many of these are, in fact, professionally used and will give you a stunning result. Now, time to piece it together.

1.) Use a Q-tip to apply a thin layer of liquid latex to the area you want your wound. This will allow the wax to stick better to the skin.

2.) Roll out a small portion of wax and mold it into the basic shape you want your wound to be. With your wax in place, use a popsicle stick to smooth down the edges. Leave the wax in the middle to be raised a little, as this will become your opening.

3.) Use the edge of the popsicle stick to etch into the wax, creating the wound. This will be the mold for your wound, in which you will paint later.

4.) **DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP** You must coat the entire wax piece with the rigid collodion in order to be able to paint it. The collodion solidifies the wax so that paint and fake blood may be placed onto it, otherwise your wound will be ruined.

5.) Now you can paint. Take a thin brush and use black paint to cover the innermost part of the wound. This will add depth. Then, add red paint to the wound until you create a result you’re happy with. You may add shades of blue, brown, green, and yellow to mimic bruising.

6.) Finally, use a different brush to add the fake blood. Make sure to appreciate the work you’ve done!

Bacon: Menace to Society

By: Alex Mahoney

Bacon: one of the worst things a person can ever think to put into their body. It can give you two things, a good taste and a heart attack from the high cholesterol. It’s called “God’s Nectar”; yes, in the sense that you will soon be meeting him from eating it all your life.

They say bacon was created as the sacrifice for a Sun God, Leto, which could’ve been forbidden to normal people and actually save their lives. People love bacon, and in modern times you get stuck with it everywhere you go. You can get it in stores, restaurants, everywhere; there’s no escaping it.

Tempting as this treat is, it should never be accepted as it will lead you to the early grave which is what the true creator of bacon is, the Devil. He leads, tempts, and creates fighting all for one little piece of meat, but it’d never be known that it’s the real reason for fighting wars and conflicts.

What this would truly cause would be mayhem and disaster, this meat is the source of all evil, and we must not give in. So if you’re offered pieces of seemingly defenseless bacon, do the right thing, and say no.

Thanks Wilbur

By: Andrew Stookey

What is bacon? Truly, in its most pure state, bacon is a slice of meat cut from a pig, and then cured in salt brine. Bacon, or as some people call it, “God’s Nectar”, is most commonly served as a breakfast dish. It has recently gained so much fame in pop culture, which has led to bacon becoming one of today’s most popular dishes.
            Bacon was invented by ancient Sumerians as a sacrifice to their Sun God, Uto, and was forbidden to normal people. This is because bacon is considered to be the most holy of all foods, and is reserved for God, not man. Today, however, it can be found in mostly every restaurant, no matter what the genre of food.
            Bacon’s irresistible taste has tempted many a person into a lifelong love of its greasy, fried-up goodness. Some cultures use bacon as a medicine to cure certain diseases that have no remedy, as it is known as a cure for the incurable.
            When it comes down to it, bacon isn’t just a strip of meat. It isn’t just an artery clogging, grease-slice piece of flesh. It is hope for the world, that one day, all countries, races, ethnicities, religions, and diverse groups will come together, and have peace over a piece: a piece, of bacon that is.

Tatler Mystery

By Isabella Cross

Weird things have been happening to the Tatler staff lately. It all started on the day that the mysterious letter showed up. All that was written was a peculiar message vowing to take revenge on the rest of the Tatler staff. Once everyone read the letter the accusations started flying. Everyone pointed their finger at another staff member; it was getting ridiculous. I, as one of the editor in chiefs, took it upon myself to be the detective and once and for all find an end to this mystery before our newspaper fell to shambles.

Here is all that I have gathered about the day of the crime:

It was the beginning of autumn. While everyone was too excited about the leaves changing colors and delicious pumpkin desserts, the suspect found the perfect time to act. The only logical time the
suspect would be able to sneak the letter into the class room would be during class change.

We concluded that whoever did it must have been a member off the staff. Here are the suspects and
their alibis:

James Viox- “I’m just as confused as everyone else.”

Habsa Dia- “I don’t have time for that LOL.”

Brent Christiansen- “I don’t know why I think Isabella has it out for me, I just think so.”

Andrew Stookey- “My handwriting definitely is not that nice.”

Sarah Singleton- “Hey, why did Isabella jump on this “detective” job so fast. I bet she did it.”

Emily Phillips- “I just got here I don’t even know these people.”

Aryan Overstreet-“Sarah seems sneaky to me. She seems to be the vengeful type.”

Jordan Gentry- “I`m late to class almost every day, so I think Mrs. Brady has it out for me.”

Alex Mahoney- “Why would I be seeking revenge on anyone?”

Lauren Trevor- “Habsa is always so quiet during that class. She was probably planning this out the
whole time.”

Sarah Barron- “I’m not even in the class at that time.”

Hayley Osborne- “Hey don’t look at me! Why would I do it?”

Isabella Cross- “It definitely wasn’t me. I saw the way Brent glared at me after the first edition of the
Tatler. It had to be because I put my name before his.”

Mrs. Brady- “I was in the bathroom during class change. How could I have done it?”

The Real Erika Ludwig

By: Andrew "Bigfoot" Stookey

 We all know the tall and blonde Ms. Ludwig. If you’ve ever had AP Literature, you know how devilish she can be, despite her cheery attitude. She’s one of the greatest English teachers in Lloyd, possibly the world. But everybody has secrets, and Ludwig has the most horrifying of them all.

 Well, today I got to have a private talk with Ludwig herself, and I discovered a few things that have never been revealed to the public about her, things that should never be known.

 Let’s just get one thing out of the way before I start. Her name isn’t Ludwig. She was born Erika Blüdwig, raised in a small Transylvanian town by her vampire aunt and uncle. “Ludwig”, as we shall call her, is only half vampire, but it explains so much.

 Ludwig, as we all know, has a stone cold heart. Turns out she literally does. Rock solid. Her care for anything not related to English is below zero. She also doesn’t sparkle in the sunlight, and hates it when she’s compared to Twilight, so never mention those novels or films to her.

 She also has a vampire’s appetite. As I walked into her room during lunch, I noticed a jar of red objects: baby hearts, pulled straight from her victims during her nightly rampages. One thing she doesn’t eat, though, is garlic.

 “I don’t eat garlic,” she says “but only because it makes my breath stink.” Ludwig threatened me to assure you that she always has perfect smelling breath.

 It can be hard for her, though. Every morning is a struggle for her, since she can’t see herself in the mirror. That explains her messy hair every once in a while.  Sometimes, you’ve just got to feel sorry for her, despite the fact that she is a half-blood sucking vampire.

 “Sometimes you don’t choose the vampire life, the vampire life chooses you,” Ludwig said, right before kicking me out before I could find out more. (She’s not a real blonde!)

Battle of the Bands

By: Alex Mahoney and Andrew Stookey

 The summer hit “Rude,” by Magic seems not so much a hit after hearing it played about a million times, with the same few lines. But after a thorough listening of the song, a true connoisseur of music can tell it’s nothing but garbage wrapped up nicely

 For one, it is literally the same exact beat throughout the whole song. No deviation in pitch, rhythm, or tune. It has too much consistency. When it comes down to it, it sounds the same during the whole song.

 The sad thing is, that’s how all music is these days. The same things over and over and over again. No variety and it`s getting old. We need some new music. And that’s where the Red Hot Chili Peppers come in.

 They are the obvious band of choice for any listener. They have multiple number one hits, such as “Higher Ground,” “Give it Away,” and “Dani California.” Each one of their Greatest Hits has had a different feel about it, not the same repetitive beat.

 When you bring it back to the Peppers they truly are where it`s at. People don’t seem to recognize true talent these days and that is what is truly upsetting about this generation. All we want is repetition, nothing new like a story being told or an event, just mindless nonsense.

What’s Poppin’ with Student Council

By: Habsa Dia

 Student Council. Who are we really? Lloyd’s Student Council is a secret organization within the school responsible for several events and fundraisers. This year's events include the Moonlight Homecoming and a rewards program that will be featured in the next issue. The upcoming fundraisers we have planned are Candy Cane Grams in December and Buy a Crush for your Crush in February. The money raised will go toward the rewards.

The elected officials are President Lauren Trevor, Secretary Aryan Overstreet, Treasurer Hayley Osborne, and myself as Vice President. Lloyd's Student Council is also comprised of class officers and any student who wishes to partake in the meetings. Mrs. Lawson is the overseer of the group. Compared to last year, Student Council has a great turn-out of members.

“There are more people this year, so it’ll be harder to control these people without an iron fist of love and authority,” says Lauren Trevor, senior, “Mrs. Lawson is stricter about attendance, which is a good thing. [Because there are more members] there’s more of a representation of the student body."

 “Student council is the most awesome student organization you can join,” says Mrs. Lawson.

 If you have any new ideas, questions, or would like to join, we urge you to talk with your class representative, a current member, or Mrs. Lawson.

Singing into a New Era

By: The Trouble Twins

 It’s the dawn of a new era – in Lloyd choir instruction that is. That’s right! We have a brand new chorus teacher. Please welcome the chorus teacher, Matt Taylor. He comes to us from Cory-Rawson High School, a very small high school in Rawson, Ohio, where he taught kids from kindergarten to high school level.  In total, he has taught seven years.

 Like all great stories, our hero comes from humble beginnings, and in Mr. Taylor’s case, he began his adventure as a lounge singer on a cruise ship. After which, he taught in Atlanta, Georgia.  He then traveled to Ohio and later to Erlanger so his girlfriend, and eventual wife, could live closer to her family. Soon after, he ended up teaching at dear ole Lloyd Memorial.

  “I like it [teaching here.] It’s really great and awesomely unique,” Taylor says.
 He was surprised at how students at Lloyd seem to be more likely to help each other out and stick up for one another. A very unique trait, indeed.  He enjoys helping the equally unique students preform to the best of their abilities. Rock on, Mr. Taylor!

 While on the scene, Mr. Taylor was able to give us an insight on some upcoming choir events. On Sunday, September 21st the Lloyd Choir team will be performing at the annual Heritage Day Festival at the train park. And if you can’t make it then, no worries because they will also be performing a Fall Choir concert on October 21st with the middle and elementary school choirs. See Mr. Taylor for more details and remember to support our choir team as they sing their way to fame.

New Yearbook

By: Jordan Gentry

The new school year has arrived along with a new Yearbook. Yearbooks this year will still be as good as ever. Luckily, the price this year has dropped from $60 to $30! The yearbook will remain a hard-back book, so you won’t have to worry about ruining it!

The school has changed companies to make the yearbook more affordable for all students. Lifetouch [the new company] allows for Parent Brags from seniors parents (information will be sent out soon). Also students can send in pictures to Mrs. Hawes to be featured in the yearbook (must be from a camera not a phone).

 Forms for the 128 page, colorful Yearbook can be found in the Library and Front Office.
“The more we sell, the cheaper we can sell it [the Yearbook] for,” expressed Mrs. Hawes.

Purchase the Yearbook before January 1stfor a price of $30, after January 1stthe price will be $35!

The Do`s and Don`ts of Homecoming: Ladies` Edition

By: Aryan Overstreet and Hayley Osbourne

Want to have an amazing time at homecoming? It`s really simple, unless you disregard the social do`s and don`ts of this great night.

Do
-keep your clothes on
-wear spandex under short dresses
-make sure you can sit without
 popping your zipper
-dance
-dress formally -pick a dress you like
-follow the music
-switch up your dance moves throughout the night
-sing to your favorite songs
-be confident
-get excited
-be Beyoncé

Don’t
-lift your dress up
-sit there
-start drama
-dance with someone else`s boyfriend
-conga dance the whole time
-ruin everyone`s night
- scream (especially when you see your friends…like you saw them yesterday…..)
-cry
-let your date ruin your night
-stand in the center of the dance floor
-dress to the theme exactly
-freak out if someone has the same dress as you (you look better anyway)
-bend completely over and shake your body
-reveal everything
-fist pump to every slow song (it`s not as funny as you think)
-be Miley Cyrus

 Also ladies, keep in mind that if you have to hold on to the wall to dance, you probably shouldn`t do it. You can still pop, lock, and drop it in a tasteful way. Don`t forget to have fun and enjoy one of the four homecomings of your high school years. Remember, you won`t get that opportunity back.

“If you leave homecoming with your hair and makeup still in good shape, you did it wrong” (Senior)

“I was part of the “train” once…..worst seven seconds of my life” (Senior)

Rewarding Summer Experience at the Dominican Republic

By Isabella Cross

One Lloyd High School student had a unique experience over the summer. When many Spanish students were offered to join along in a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, one student jumped on the opportunity.

Jasmine Rider, senior, seized the opportunity to venture out of the country to help those in need and to practice speaking Spanish as well.

She was very grateful for all the support that she received during the beginning process of the trip. “Three people donated $200, we paid $300, and the rotary club paid $100” said Rider. “I also emailed a lot of people like family.”

“We visited an orphanage for children with disabilities. We [also] visited a preschool and brought them books and candy and drinks and got to hang out with them,” she said when describing her experience.

When asked how her Spanish classes contributed to making the experience more rewarding, she responded, “It helped a lot when people tried to talk to us. I got a lot of hints from what they were saying from what I learned in Spanish class.”

Overall she expressed that her experience was very eye opening. She was very surprised to learn first-hand how people in impoverished countries have to live. During her short couple of weeks working with many different underprivileged children she gained a new perspective on the world that she would not have acquired without this trip.

“It really changed my views to see how rich people in America are. Even poor Americans have homes, but the poor people [in the Dominican Republic] live in the street and there are babies with their mothers that don’t have much clothes on.”

“Even cows and animals have their ribs showing and it showed me how good we have it here.”

New Pre-School for Erlanger-Elsmere Schools!

By Isabella Cross

There is a new and exciting part of the Erlanger Elsmere School system! A new preschool was opened on September 2 for the 2014-2015 school year. It is open for any 3, 4, and 5 year old who are preparing to enter kindergarten. There will be full day or half day classes available Monday through Friday. This is a great opportunity for younger children to prepare themselves to be successful for Kindergarten to the 12th grade. There has been much praise for how well the teachers have been interacting with the children. Mrs. Glass, school counselor has a 3 year old daughter in the program. She said regarding the school, “I love it!” She likes the small class sizes which are about a 6:1 student teacher ratio. She also likes the convenience of it because it goes until 6:30 so she can finish her work after school and pick up her daughter when she needs to while knowing her daughter was in good care.  She said that the teachers are pretty amazing. The children enjoy learning and play while they interact with other children their age. This program will be setting up our local children to become successful while they still have fun. So next time you enter 3rd hallway don’t be surprised to see students a little smaller than you’re used to!

Dress for Success

By: Aryan Overstreet and Hayley Osborne

Yes, we know, we don`t technically have a set dress code, but there are still rules that should be followed. It can be hard transitioning from hot, summer fun to sitting in the classroom, but you can and need to do it. It may be hard to believe, but there are different standards from leisure to education.

* No crop tops
* No low cut shirts
* Rips in the wrong places are a no
* Lace with no boundaries= no
* See-through pants, leggings, shirts, anything= no
* Shorts and skirts should be worn at a respectable level
* Pants stay at the waist (not below)

“It`s not vulgar…but it`s like displaying” Mason Martin (freshman)

“Underwear stays under. I don`t care how cute your belly is; I don’t want to see it. We`re not at the pool.”   MRS. ROBERTS

“Put the twins away” anonymous

“Crop tops and low leggings….why at school?” Olivia Dowling (freshman)

“Ladies, look in the mirror before you leave. If you look like you could go pole dancing after school, change!” anonymous

With all of these tips, please use your best judgment. These are not just suggestions, they are demands.

Lloyd Volleyball Launched Back Into Action

By: James H. Viox V

 The Lloyd Memorial Lady Juggernauts volleyball team is underway in their new and exciting season. The Lady Juggs started their season off against an always tough Holy Cross team in the 9th Region Touchstone All “A” Classic on August 18th. The Juggernauts faced a very tough defeat against a very talented team, but fought hard.

 Along with a new season come a few new additions. These additions include new head coach Brittany Li Calzi and new JV/Assistant Varsity coach Heather Krebs. Also the new school year brings new freshmen players. Out of teams 14 players, 8 of them are accounted for as freshmen. They bring a lot of new and up and coming talent.

 "We have potential to do great things, but it's going to take a lot of hard work, improvements, and execution to get us to the point where we want to be." Addison Viox, Freshmen.

The Juggernauts only have one senior this season, Payton Brown. She'll have plenty of weight to carry on her shoulders this year. She'll be one of the main contributors of the team’s improvements and will really need to push her team to meet some of their high expectations.

“We are a young team so I’m really looking forward to grow as the season progresses. We are very capable at winning a lot of games this season” Brown, Senior.

Jasmine Huntley, Junior, states, “We have a lot of tough competition this year. Out of all the teams we’ll face St. Henry, Holy Cross, and Newport Central Catholic will be toughest battles”.

 As the Juggernauts begin their season, they`ll have matchups against Newport High School (Home) on September 3rd, Ludlow High School (Away) on September 4th, and Saint Henry (Home) on September 8th. All games should be intense and interesting. Go Juggs!

Lloyd Cross Country Team Goes for the Gold

By: Andrew Stookey

 Lloyd’s cross country team is in it to win it this year as the team strives for victory. Both boys` and girls` team are destined to win State this season.

With a diverse team and the coaching of Erin Pifer and former Lloyd great, Joey Landrum, the team has a chance of winning it big.

 “We’ve got a lot of good runners this year. Both the boys` and girls` team can win at least trophies,” says Coach Erin Pifer. She has the team working hard for their upcoming victories.

 The team, consisting of students from all grade levels, has potential to go far this season, and they plan to.

 “We’re going to win State this year,” says junior Tyler Breeden. “Last year we got 5th, but this year we’re getting a trophy.” Tyler, along with cross country, plays baseball for Lloyd.

A Series of Unfortunate Films

By: Andrew Stookey

 Have you ever just grabbed some ice cream, sat down on your couch, and watched an hour and a half long movie of a dumpster? Of course you have, if you’ve ever watched a Jim Carrey movie.

 Jim Carrey, also known as “Piece of Garbage” by close friends, is one of the worst actors in film history. His films cause eardrums to bleed and eyes to melt, which is seriously unhealthy for moviegoers.

 In Batman Forever, a film that received a 33% rating from critics, Jim Carrey plays The Riddler, and might I add, one of the worst Riddler’s ever. He makes the movie unwatchable with his annoying smile and awful laughter. Here’s a riddle for you: How did this movie even make a profit?

 Listening to Carrey babble on about how “…everything adds up to 23…” in The Number 23 is like having Sloth from The Goonies whisper the entirety of Fifty Shades of Grey in your ear. It just isn’t fun.

 When it comes down to it, Jim Carrey is an awful actor. Need some proof? J-I-M  C-A-R-R-E-Y: W-O-R-S-T  A-C-T-O-R  E-V-E-R. It all comes back to 23.

Jim Carrey: The Real Deal

By: Alex Mahoney

 Jim Carrey, the man behind The Mask, literally he bounces his way from one role to the next making his viewers laugh the entire time; one of the greatest comedic actors of our time. Keeping you entertained and satisfied all the while.

 Jim Carrey, or rather Ace Ventura, Bruce, and Carl Allen is considered to be one of the top actors of our generation by many. He can bring you to tears simply by the look on his face and the noises accompanying it, bringing a smile to any face.

 In Ace Venture: Pet Detective, a film got 6.9 out of 10 based on reviews. Jim Carrey plays a very charismatic man that has a love for animals, and keeping them safe. The movie filled with wacky antics and adorable animals. What’s not to love? He keeps you interested the entire time due to the strange way he goes about solving the crimes.

 In Bruce Almighty, a film that received an astounding 6.7 out of 10 based on viewers. Jim is a man who is struggling to find his place in life, getting to where he wants to and succeeding. He takes on all the responsibilities of God and his powers, learning that he cannot give everyone what they want, and he has to be thankful for what he has already. He learns a life lesson that everyone can take to heart in this comedy sent from Heaven.

 To top it all off, Yes Man, came out with a 6.9 out of 10, a score that was extremely underrated for a movie of this caliber. Carl Allen, says yes to everything in order to change the way he thinks for his life to get better. This shows him that it was okay to take a leap of faith; you don’t have to be afraid of something. This was his story of a very comedic struggle.

 The greatness of a man will be what he has left behind as his legacy, and this is Jim Carrey’s legacy, as an amazing man and even greater actor.

Advice From Seniors to Freshmen

By Sarah Singleton and Lauren Trevor

Attention freshmen class of 2018! Are you afraid that you won’t make it to class on time, that you won’t have anywhere to sit at lunch, or that an upper classman might dunk your head in a toilet or stuff you into a locker? If any of these apply to you, then the following advice might be of use!

Every student has problems dealing with the transition from middle school to high school. Getting from hall to hall and class to class and trying to go to your locker in between can be a hassle and will sometimes earn you a one-way ticket to detention. The solution to this problem is simple. Don’t use your locker unless you really need it or you have the time to. Another solution is equally as efficient and simple.

“Bring a big backpack,” says senior Lauren McMillen.

Using a large bag to carry all your school supplies will allow you to avoid the hassle of going to you locker after each period.

Great, now that you can make it to class on time and in one piece, you can focus on keeping ahead in your studies. Classes in high school can be tough, but there are easy ways to get past any anxiety about the work load. First of all, if you’re having trouble or are worried about the school year ahead don’t be afraid to talk to your teacher.

“Be friends with your teachers; they can help you,” advises senior Ben Traylor.

Asking questions about the class can help ease your mind and prepare you for what’s to come. Just make sure you do what’s to come.

“Do your homework, trust me,” warns Kaeli Perriman, “it’ll help you in the long run.”

And trust her you should. Not doing your homework is an easy way to dig yourself into a hole. Not only does not doing homework slowly kill your grade like a hamster with stage 3 leukemia, but it will make you ill-prepared for college.

And as McMillen said, “Always try to challenge yourself.”

If your classes seem too easy, talk to your teacher or counselor to see if you can be put into a higher class. It’s always good to get ahead!

Another thing to keep in mind is the dreaded motif of all high school television dramas: gym class. The most important piece of advice is definitely what you wear.
“Always dress out,” says McMillen.

Yes, please do because if you don’t, it’s like not turning in your homework. Your participation grade for that day is history. Ladies, let’s not wear booty shorts and stilettos to play dodgeball.

So starting high school can be rough, yeah, that’s a given, but it doesn’t have to be like that all the way through. Just keep an open mind and heed the advice above and freshman year will be easy febreezey!

“And don’t be an idiot,” love from the authors.

“We Were Liars”

By: Sarah Barron

Books have a way with triggering inner emotions. It is normal to expect the best outcome in a book because of the fairytale stories. The normal cliché the boy and girl fall in love and stay together forever. No one expects the end of a book to be upsetting because of the horrible things that may lead up to the ending. Every story has two sides to it. Before there was happily ever after there were the grim stories.

“We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart is about a teenage girl named Cadence. Cadence along with her family and friends met at an island every summer. It is at this island that a true tragedy occurs and Cadence loses most of her memories including the truth behind what happened. She is forced to fight her way through remembering what happened and she is the only one capable of finding it.

Lockhart continuously has Cadence telling her own made up fairytale stories throughout the book. The fairytales that she mentions always somehow relate back to the actual story that the book is telling. Towards the ending Cadence mentions that not all fairytales end happily. “We Were Liars” was very enjoyable and intense from the beginning to the ending. I could read the book a thousand times over. It triggers several emotions in many different ways unlike some other books. “We Were Liars” simply took my breath away.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance and suspense. It is heavy with the talk of love and will have anyone on their toes guessing the whole way through. To anyone who is expecting a normal cliché fairytale or just a love book this book may not be the one. Remember not all fairytales have a happy ending.

Archery Club in Motion

By Jordan Gentry

Bull’s-eye! Archery Club, coached by Mrs. (Rhonda) Smith, is soon to be underway and joining is a straight shot. Any student in high school is able to join the team, whether you know how to shoot an arrow or not.

Matches for the team don’t take place until October, but practices (open gyms) are now every day, except Friday, at 6:45am until 7:45am. Practices include tic-tac toe and balloon competitions.

Mrs. Smith would like all students to know that any student interested is welcome to try out. Archery club is for any student who wants to get involved in a fun, exciting sport that doubles as a lifetime skill. You don’t have to be athletically skilled, the sport is ready for anyone who is willing. Students with physical or other limitations are also able to participate, so don’t be shy.

Practices will be both before and after school to accommodate all types of schedules.

Lauren McMillen, a current participant says, “Everyone is welcome. Come join, we will teach you how [to shoot an arrow]!” She also includes that being on the team is “really fun” and that “there are really good competitors.”

Throughout the competitions, which take place on the weekend, “there can be from a couple hundred to 500 shooters competing,” says Mrs. Smith. “There are 300 points possible for each shooter, shooters shoot three “ends” [rounds] of five arrows each.”

Matches are based on whistle commands with a set of strict rules that must be followed for safety; Just like Mrs. Smith teaches in class.

Outdoor skills are also engaged as participants will get to spend time outdoors and not dealing with high tech items.

“Anything that will assist in getting them out there [outside] and in the fresh air can’t be bad,” says Mrs. Smith when asked how she felt about Wildlife Conservation agencies being concerned that too many young people are going without learning outdoor skills.

Mrs. Smith hopes that this season will bring along a tournament win and a beautiful trophy to be placed at Lloyd.

High School Bucket List

By Habsa Dia

Time flies. It is a guaranteed thing. So the time spent in high school won’t be as long as it seems like it is gonna be. One of the best ways to create great memories of your time is to make a bucket list and complete it during your years in high school, or even extend it after high school if necessary. Whether it be joining The Color Run, volunteering, or even something as simple as getting a good night’s rest, your bucket list is boundless.
Creating a bucket list during high school is a great way to keep track of time spent. Anything goes when it comes to a bucket list:
* Go to a concert
* Give a compliment daily
* Join a sport or club
* High-five someone new everyday
* Get your license
* Find what you are amazing at
* Show your school spirit
* Dance with a stranger
* Say how much you appreciate your teacher
* Register to vote
* Graduate
* Write a letter to your future self
“I wanna do a 5k and skydiving,” says Lauren Mitchell, sophomore.
“I’ve wanted to go outside the country, like go to Italy,” says Catherine Wood, senior, “I guess I would want to get accepted to college before I leave and have a great time my senior year.” Catherine has also managed to “annoy Sarah Singleton every year,” something she can mark off of her list.
“I’ve always wanted to meet a celebrity,” said Karen Zumba, sophomore. “I’d like to try foreign food, something I’ve never tasted. I’d also like to go to an island since I couldn’t go with my family.”
Anything you wish can go on your list, it is totally in your control. As long as passion is there, everything is possible. Why waste time on a great opportunity to make some new memories? What would go on your list?

The 3rd Hall Blues!

By: Ashley Crupper and Naomi Hillard

There was news, here and there, about you,

Well, that’s because you were the utter opposite of new.

And we hadn’t really thought much of you and where you were placed,

Only because we hated falling right on our face.

You were definitely crammed and you stunk,

And, trust us; it was not just the freshmen funk.

Don’t get us wrong, you were cool,

You were 75% of the school.

We grew to like you because you’re where all our classes were,

There are plenty of memories, everyone agrees, I’m sure.

Some good ones, and some bad, a variety of sorts,

We ran up and down your hall to condition for sports.

We’ve spent 3 years in your hall, and have grown to not care

Because there are absolute and inevitable thoughts that we share.

But, as seniors, we miss you because you were really all we had.

The new hall, oh gosh, it just makes us mad.

We look down the hall and think about those days,

With our favorite classes, our favorite times, in those favorite ways.

I’m sorry that we left; it’s not our fault we promise,

Just know that it’s always going to be you that we miss!
