High School is going to fly by, and soon we’ll be out of the safety net of Lloyd. It’s no new fact the college is different from high school. For most people it's like a new world. College is going to come whether we are ready or not. Lloyd counteracts this by offering NKU and Gateway classes to students as seniors. These classes do require you to work hard throughout high school in order take enroll, but in the end it’s so worth it.
NKU classes are held by no other than Northern Kentucky University. The first semester consists of political science, college writing, and math 119. You may already know one of the teachers Ms. Jump. Math 119 is held every day while political science and college writing alternate days. Next semester includes math 129, speech, and intro to social work. There are the obvious benefits of preparing for college, but there are also some hidden benefits. The classes don’t start till 8:30 Monday through Thursday, and Friday classes aren't held to third period. Since Friday is a sixth period day we don’t have to be here till 10:15. According to Kristen Wesley, “It’s wonderful to come to school late and not actually be late.” From experience I can say sleeping in on a school day is beyond words. Academic factors contribute by having college credits before you even graduate. The NKU classes are free as long as you get above a “C” in each class. With the huge expense of college saving a few thousand or so is remarkable. Katherine Zumba states, “It’s a privilege and an opportunity to save money.”
There is also another alternative, you can take Gateway classes. You actually get to go to the Gateway campus. English 101 is offered; the times differ from morning to evening. The classes are each a couple hours long, but don't freak you do get a twenty minute break. The same as NKU you do receive college credits. Stacey Rider states, "It's a little overwhelming at first, but it will be worth it in the end." There are chances to get a free period. Depending on when your class is you may not have a first period or be able to leave early to attend the class. Miranda Robbins feels, "That it is a great opportunity and a chance to experience college life." The cost follows the same guideline as the NKU classes. Actually getting to go to the campus gives you the feel of being an actual student.
To some college seems so far away, but four years isn't long. This chance prepares you for what is coming ahead. The effort you put in now benefits you in the future. Besides the fact you are saving a lot of money, you get to become a college student. Sure this seems like not a big deal, but with this economy a head start on a future career is great.
