Lloyd Boys Pull Out Win against Rival Dixie for Championship!

The Lloyd boys ground out a win in basketball on Friday night, February 24, in a championship home game against their bitter rivals, the Dixie Colonels. In a close, suspenseful game, Lloyd hung onto a 59-57 lead at the final buzzer, winning the 34th District championship and, no doubt, leaving some broken dreams on the Dixie side of the court.
Way to go, Juggernauts.

Seniors Stand Strong Against Grant County

The Lloyd Memorial seniors, who were honored on Senior Night last Thursday, Feb, 16, helped defeat Grant County 57-52. It was a great way to end the regular season for the six seniors who have dedicated their time and talents to the team and the school. The game was hard fought throughout its entirety, remaining close. Grant County was able to cut our lead down to one point in the second half; however, Lloyd pushed the lead to five points at the end of the third quarter.

The game never got any tighter than that. Lloyd, for the most part, dominated the fourth quarter. Their stingy defense was able to force Grant County into multiple turnovers without giving any ground, which led to several easy baskets for us. Lloyd commanded the scoring in the fourth quarter until late in the game when Grant County hit a couple of shots. Excellent free throw shooting helped Lloyd secure the victory on Senior Night. For seniors Brady Asher, Tyler Bray, Niko Hall, Robert McKay, Dalton McGue, and KT Williams, the final regular season of their high school careers ended on a high note.

Hillbillies, Unite!

Hillbilly, white trash, hick, redneck. We’ve all heard these terms. “Oh, you’re from Kentucky, why don’t you have an accent?” The term hillbilly is a derogatory term that refers to the people of Appalachia, and the lovely stereotypes that come along with this term. Overalls, no teeth, drink moonshine, or socially backward are all stereotypes of the common hillbilly. The term hillbilly came about during the Great Depression when many people from the Appalachian region moved west to find work, only to find out that their culture was vastly different from the people of cities like Detroit and Chicago. While other parts of the country were becoming technologically and socially advanced, their area stayed the same. Soon, TV shows, like The Beverly Hillbillies, were making these differences public, causing people from the Appalachian area to seem poor and ignorant.

Some people from Eastern Kentucky still live up to these stereotypes. The population in Appalachia still remains very poor, only relying on logging, mining, and illegal moonshining to make a living. Kentucky also ranks 50^th in the nation for the number of adults who cannot read. 60% of the counties in Eastern Kentucky are consistently poor. The unemployment rate is 45%, leaving many people to rely on welfare or other federal aid, or the selling of prescription drugs, to survive. Poor dental hygiene and diabetes are prevalent.

Despite these alarming facts, the Appalachian region of Kentucky has developed since the Great Depression. Some parts may still remain undeveloped, and many areas in Pikeville have yet to be established. Regardless, we should be proud of our state and our heritage. We have attractions like Lake Cumberland, Mammoth Cave, and the Red River Gorge. Our state is known for bourbon, whiskey, mint juleps, horse racing, and college basketball. The Wildcats, Hilltoppers, and Cardinals are among the most tradition-rich college basketball teams in the US, with a combined 9 championships, and 22 NCAA National Championships. Even though people from Kentucky are often stereotyped as hillbillies, we still share a common heritage we can all be proud of.

Lady Juggs Triumph against District Rival Ludlow

The Lady Juggernauts Girls Basketball team took on their first district rival last night, February 20, in the district tournament versus the Ludlow Panthers. It was a close game the whole night. The Juggernauts were up fifteen points at half time, but when the fourth quarter rolled around, both teams were neck and neck with the Lady Juggs only leading by a few points. Ludlow had a chance at winning the game by one with a three-point shot, but could not pull it off. The Lady Juggs triumphed.

Congratulations to the girls. LMHS is proud of you all!

They will move on to play St. Henry High School in second round of districts tonight, February 21 at Lloyd’s gym.

Trends: Education (Not Slang) is the Key to Success!

The dictionary definition of slang:

1. Words, expressions and usages that are replacements for standard ones, often short-lived and usually considered unsuitable for formal contexts

2. A form of language used by a particular group of people, often deliberately created and used to exclude people outside the group.

Slang has become the language of teens today! They act like they are uneducated when they change the pronunciation of words. If this continues, then what is the purpose of school? Senior Kimberly Costigan thinks that “[slang] makes people sound like they have never been in a school building, like they’re uneducated.”

Teachers would be very upset if they knew how kids talked outside of school. Slang is another language! To listen to it is like trying to understand birds or monkeys. Ms. Gibson feels as if slang “has its proper uses; just know when to switch out of slang and switch into professional mode.” Her example from student work: “you got mines paycheck.” She is worried that the young are becoming infected with this new form of language.

Mr. Cooley thinks that “it has its appropriateness,” as in, “Yo, what’s up, soul chicken?”

Mr. Ryan uses slang in classroom because that’s the only way people will understand what he’s saying. “Na bra!” he says. “I don’t think it is ignorant, it has a certain time and place to be used.”

Remember, everybody: “Id iz wad id iz!”

Stay in school and speak English!

LMHS Senior Dinner Dance, 2012: A Night to Remember

Saturday, February 11, 2012 was the LMHS Senior Dinner Dance.

The Dinner Dance was full of fun. It was a chance to create some final memories for the class of ‘12. We enjoyed watching Tati sing and dance to “Single Ladies.” It was a joy watching Israel Mathis goof with Alex Henn, Dakota Kidd and Tyler Plageman to the song “YMCA.”

Advice to Underclassmen #2: High School Relationships

Being an underclassman can have its advantages and itsdisadvantages. Personally, when I was an underclassman, I struggled. It waseasy to keep up my grades and stay on top of my homework, but when it came tomy social life things were not as simple. When you are an underclassman youwant to find your place in high school. It was very hard for me to adapt tothis whole new school with all these new people. Since it is towards the end ofthe year I hope that all of you freshmen are adapted to the school.

When I was an underclassman I was allowed to date for thefirst time in my life, and I was getting noticed more than I ever had before. Icould not stay away from senior boys; I dated a few and ended up in a placewhere I did not want to be. Not only did I make bad decisions, but I ruined myrelationship with my mom because I was lying to her about the places I wasgoing. If I can give some advice to you, it would be to stay in your age group whenyou date and don’t rush anything you are not comfortable with. There are plentyof good guys out there, so don’t rush into a relationship and come out withregrets. This is obviously more directed towards the girls reading this, but tothe boys a piece of advice would be: don’t give up on the hope that you willfind the right person some day. Andalso, Don’t change who you are foranyone. You have four years to spend with your class; take in every momentlike it is your last. Friends will last a lifetime, butrelationships will walk in and out of your lives.

Lady Juggs Bowling Triumphs Against Dayton's Devils

The LMHS Girls’ Bowling team faced off against the Dayton Green Devils on Thursday, Feb. 9th. When the dust had settled and the pins were counted, the ladies of Lloyd won 6 out of 7 points against them. This is their best match of the season with a team average of 107.

Bill Pilgram, the head coach of the bowling team, expressed his happiness at the win the girls pulled out. “I’m glad they won, they needed a victory,” he told The Tatler. “Now we will move forward and keep the winning going.”

With new momentum after this narrow win, this ladies’ team has distinguished itself from last year’s. “We lost a lot of talent [after] last year,” Pilgram says, “but gained a lot also.”

The players are optimistic about their upcoming matches. Senior Samantha Ray says, “If everyone shows up to practice we will continue to win.”

Softball Season Ahead for Devoted Team

Although this year’s softball team will be relatively young, that doesn’t mean they won’t become the best team in the last few years. They have been working for months to make it up to this point and they won’t let anything stand in their way. What it takes is hard work, and they’ve got it.

Although tryouts officially start February 15^th, they have been working every week since October doing conditioning for their season. The Lady Juggernauts, who were 14-14 last year, are braving a 34 game schedule that includes 4 weekend tournaments. They are even taking a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where they will play in a tournament on the weekend.

As for the players themselves, they lost 3 seniors last year. Returning seniors this year are Staci Stewart, Ellen Woodward, Brittney Hussey and Sarah Rudd.

When asked about her excitement for the upcoming year, Hussey replied, “I’ve been waiting for softball to start ever since it ended. It’s sad though, because it is our last year, but that’s an even better incentive to go beyond people’s expectations of us.”

They plan on dominating in their district this year and hope to move on to the regional tournament. Even though the younger girls on the team are lacking in experience, they have no doubt that the team this year will surprise everyone with what they can do.

Senior Sarah Rudd says, “It’s not always the talent that will beat the best teams; sometimes the hard work and devotion overcome everything.”

There will be no shortage of hard work and devotion on the team this year.

College Corner: Morehead State University

Why Morehead State? Morehead State University is a small college in Rowan County, about 2 and half hours away from Erlanger. Morehead is located on the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Cave Run, a local lake, is a very popular hangout down in Morehead. MSU is a great buy (the cheapest college in the state at $6200 a year), but a great education, too. Morehead state is also a good prospect if you want to meet quality people. Morehead State has over 70 graduate programs, and was recognized for the eighth consecutive year as one of the top public universities in the South in the 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S.News & World Report. MSU has over 10 campuses throughout the state of Kentucky. If you are looking for a small college environment then MSU is right for you, with more than 75% of the classes containing less than 20 students in them.

MSU has over 100 clubs and organizations if you like to get involved, and also a great Greek Life scene, if you’re looking to get into a sorority or fraternity. MSU hosts over 16 intermural sports. Mr. Stratton, a MSU alumni, really enjoyed attending school there. “My mom liked it, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go there. I went to OSU but [then] I wanted to get away.” He was involved in the MSU Peace Corps, protesting the war in Iraq. He was also involved politically. Many may think Morehead’s isolation makes it boring, but Stratton thinks “you just need to meet the right people.” Stratton had a great relationship with all of his professors and he stated that the MSU history department was the 2^nd most published in Kentucky, behind UK. He made lifelong friends there, and recommends that anyone who wants to go to Morehead has to be willing to meet new people and become social.

How to Be Happy

There are many different ways to be happy, especially considering everyone has their own personal interests and attitude. While some of us are naturally happier than others, I feel that there are three basic factors that will make any person happier, regardless of who they are. Those three are having good relationships, doing activities you enjoy, and having a suitable job for yourself.

1. “Without friendship, happiness is not possible.”—Aristotle. It’s true, isn’t it? Friends are so important when it comes to your happiness. They’re who you can go to when you have a problem, people you can trust when you have a secret, and most importantly the ones you can share great memories with. “What would I do without you?” I hear people say all the time to their best friends. Well, I know that you’d be less happy without them for sure. Friendship isn’t the only type of relationship to focus on. You also have your family. I know many people don’t get along with their parents or siblings, but you should earnestly try. The best kind of family will always love you unconditionally and has a great impact on who you will become as a person, which also influences your happiness.

2. “Happiness grows less from the passive experience of desirable circumstances than from involvement in valued activities and progress towards one’s goals.”—David Myers and Ed Diener. Clearly, doing activities we like will make us happier. But surprisingly, many people don’t bother to do them due to laziness or poor time management skills. If you manage your time wisely, you can make the most out of your free time with activities you enjoy. Doing them each day will increase your overall level of satisfaction; however, it’s not enough to just like the activity. It should also have some meaning to it. Activities that you find fun yet have negative consequences—drugs, for example—should be avoided because once those consequences arrive, your happiness will take a hit.

3. “Taste the joy that springs from labor.”-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The time you spend in school passes quickly. Before you know it, you’ll be presented with the task of finding a job. There is a simple process for finding a job suitable for yourself. What are your strengths and what do you enjoy doing? For instance, if you’re good at math and feel an urge to instruct, perhaps you should become a math teacher. I know money is always a consideration when it comes to choosing a job, but I wouldn’t focus too much time on that. Trust me, if you get a job only because it makes a lot of money, you’re very likely to end up unhappy. It’s more important to get a job that you truly enjoy doing, regardless of the pay. You’ll be happier and less stressed.

Last-Minute Heartbreaker for Lady Juggs on the Court

On Monday, February 6, the Lady Juggs took on the Beechwood Tigers in basketball. The game was close throughout. Neither team led by more than four points at any time. The Juggernauts fell short by one point, falling 44-45 to Beechwood. Shelby Rudd, Lloyd’s starting shooting guard, led the team with 22 points and a team high of six three-pointers. Rudd said, “They were very aggressive. They kept pushing so I just started pushing back.” At halftime both teams were tied at 17 points. Danielle Cheetum was the second leading scorer, contributing 13 points. Even though the Lady Juggernauts came up short, they still played a great game.

St. Henry Slips Past Lloyd; Juggs Prove They Can Play With Elite

The Juggernauts, coming off a gut-wrenching 60-58 loss to district rival Dixie on Tuesday, were back at home on Friday, Jan. 27, to face the visiting St. Henry Crusaders. The Juggs tried to bounce back, but fell to St. Henry by a final score of 62-54. The eight point margin of victory doesn’t show how close the game actually was. The Juggs started off sluggish on offense and trailed 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. That was the last time St. Henry would lead by double digits. The Juggernauts exploded offensively in the second quarter and their defense toughened up, holding the St. Henry offense to a meager 12 points. St. Henry took a smaller lead into the half, after Lloyd senior guard Brady Asher banked in a deep three to beat the buzzer. The second half was a back-and-forth battle that found the Juggs up late in the half, 48-47. Unfortunately, a couple of late turnovers gave St. Henry the upper hand in the final stages of the game. Lloyd battled through foul trouble to keep the game at four points later in the fourth quarter, but excellent shooting from the foul stripe, despite a loud, blacked-out Lloyd student section, helped St. Henry keep their distance and hold on for the win. All five Juggernaut starters scored, and the team got major contributions off the bench from senior forward Robert McKay. The losses to both Dixie and St. Henry this week should in no way diminish the team’s confidence. They played two heavily favored teams and took them down to the wire. The Juggernauts proved this week that they are not pushovers and that they will bring a tough game every time they step on the court. The Juggs have reason to expect a victory in a potential rematch with either team.

Marching is Harder than It Looks

Marching band is a highly competitive activity that requires strength, endurance and balance. It takes pure talent to play an instrument and march to the beat at the same time. Trust me, it is way harder than it looks. So why isn’t marching band considered a sport here at Lloyd? In fact, the Lloyd High School Marching Band is often overshadowed by the other fall sports, despite the numerous awards it brings to the school. Lloyd Marching Band is well known around the state, claiming 6 state titles in the past 20 years. The football team or the volleyball team can’t say the same.

Meshá Richardson, senior, and captain of the colorguard, shares the same opinion. “Marching band and colorguard takes a lot more dedication and focus than…other sports at Lloyd,” she says, “and we practice way more than the football team ever will and in any weather condition. We dedicate our whole summers to make one show, and it’s very demanding and difficult.”

The marching band here at Lloyd gets little to no respect from peers. Maybe if it was considered a real sport we would get more recognition for what we do for the school and all the hard work we put into it. Marching band was the best experience throughout my four years in high school, and the team should be recognized for what it has accomplished. Despite band director changes, our band has been able to regain the momentum we once had. The football team endured the same change, but received more recognition for it.

Unless you have ever marched before, you will not know how much focus, time and energy goes into it. Hefting an instrument, playing it and marching to the beat at the same time takes raw talent and practice. Spinning a flag or a weapon, throwing it in the air and catching it, all while marching and dancing in time with the music, also requires determination and focus. Because of this, marching band should be given status as a sport here at Lloyd, or at least be considered for its accomplishments, instead of being pushed to the backburner.

Dixie-Lloyd Game Comes Down to the Final Seconds

Dixie and Lloyd renewed their annual rivalry in dramatic fashion Tuesday night. With a final score of 60-58, Lloyd fell in a game that was down to the wire against a Dixie team ranked 14^th in the state. Tyler Bray led the team with 19 points and 6 rebounds; KT Williams and Brady Asher each contributed 11 points. Coach Key remarked on how his team’s resiliency impressed him. “We never let one bad play affect the outcome of the next play.” The team showed this stubbornness in the fourth quarter when, down 10, Lloyd went on a 10-1 scoring burst that resulted in the team trailing Dixie by just one, with two minutes remaining. Dixie’s Brandon Hatton, a tough matchup the whole night, led his team to their slim victory in the closing seconds of the game, a real thriller. Many consider this game a moral victory for Lloyd because we gave Dixie, a team of great talent, a run for their money, but Coach Key said that will be true only if we “use this game to move forward and use it as fuel to get better.” This isn’t the last time we will see Dixie this year, because if the cards play out in our favor, we will meet them again in the regional final on our home court. Thought Tuesday night was electric, just wait until we see the Colonels in our house!

Dear Underclassmen #1

To all the misled underclassmen out there, I have some advice to help you throughout high school:

TIP 1: Don’t be rude or disrespectful.

Yes, teenagers have attitudes, but school is not the place for them. You should give your teachers a lot of respect; their help will create a future for you. Even if you dislike your boss, you wouldn’t walk out on him; you need money, and you need an education, too. Learn to have patience and self-control.

TIP 2: Don’t be a bully.

If a kid doesn’t have the hottest shoes out or cloths, do not make fun of him or her. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and realize you wouldn’t like being talked about, pushed around, and taunted. They are your peers, even members of your graduating class. Befriend them and enjoy your high school years instead of being bitter.

TIP 3: Homework, Homework, Homework.

Homework, something every teen dreads doing. Teens would rather be watching Jersey Shore (at least some of us), playing video games, and hanging with friends. Thing is… those choices won’t get you into college. You can join a club and still hang out with your friends. Just focus on schoolwork first. High school flies by; before you know it, you’re applying to college and leaving Lloyd behind.

Keep in mind these three tips; they may help you during your time here. Choose your career and your studies before your friends.

Ten Ways to Give Your Significant Other the Perfect Valentine's Day

People may oppose Valentine’s Day, calling it just another “Hallmark Holiday,” but the truth is, they just want someone to buy them flowers. Everyone loves a surprise and people wouldn’t be so opposed to Valentine’s Day if they were involved in the festivities. So, to get you in the mood, here are some tips for this the best Valentine’s Day ever.

Tip 1: Surprise him/her by planning the entire day.

Tip 2: Every girl loves flowers.

Tip 3: It’s extremely hard to buy a Valentine’s Day present for your boyfriend, so instead of buying, make him something. It will mean more and it will be way cheaper. (But for those of you who are not creatively inclined, boys like shoes and hats.)

Tip 4: If you’re going to eat, don’t pick somewhere you would usually go to (McDonald’s) and maybe step up your standards. Take him/her to a nice place. And guys, ALWAYS pay the bill. If girls offer, they’re just trying to be nice, but do not let them pay.

Tip 5: If you go to see a movie, let the girl pick. Even though guys don’t like the chick flicks, you need to give in for the day.

Tip 6: Plan on saying romantic things, even if you feel like a lame-o. Even though people won’t admit it out loud, they like knowing they’re on your mind all the time.

Tip 7: Take a cute picture together to commemorate your perfect day.

Tip 8: Compliment each other all night. Guys, make sure you tell your girl how beautiful she is. Always let her know how you’re feeling.

Tip 9: Make sure your swag is on full attack (look nice).

Tip 10: And finally, The Kiss. If you’re worried about the goodnight kiss, just keep it simple. There’s no need to rush things or feel nervous. Be natural.

Originally founded in 1921 in Covington as Villa Madonna College with the intent of educating young women to become Catholic schoolteachers, the college became co-ed in 1945 and was given its current name in 1968.

Today Thomas More is a flourishing, private, four-year college with 1,900 full- and part-time students. Its liberal arts curriculum emphasizes culture and philosophy while respecting the pursuits of science. The Stunning Seven: Lloyd Students Rock at Band Symposium

On January 21^st, several Lloyd band members participated in the Tri-State Band Symposium at Northern Kentucky University. This band consists of Northern Kentucky’s most talented musicians from many different schools. The seven participating students from Lloyd were Hope Bradford, Morgan Morrison, Kaeli Perriman, Megan McEntee, Ian Himes, Philip Richardson, and Wesley Gault. These students started out the day at 8 am with auditions that consisted of up to nine different pieces of music, began group rehearsals at 11 am, and continued practicing until 9pm.

The students were then up bright and early on Saturday, with rehearsal from 9am to 1pm. The most impressive part was that they performed in concert that day at 3 pm. According to Hope Bradford, senior flute player, the hardest part about participating in the band was “learning the music as quickly as they expect you to.” Although the expected speed of mastery was difficult to her, she enjoyed the music and loved playing in large ensembles with many different instruments and talented students.

5 Ways We Can Replace the Postal Service

The U.S. Postal Service is in trouble. Though help for its debt is on the horizon, the Service might still, as Sen. John McCain has said, “go the way of the horse-and-buggy” (and since this is coming from a man who is slightly older than World War II, we can probably trust his instincts on what’s an antique and what’s not). Here are five ways to replace the Postal Service in our everyday lives:

1. Find a way to send medicine by email. With its one-day delivery guarantee, the USPS quickly and cheaply brings needed medication to seniors and disabled people who depend on Medicare/Medicaid to live. However, if we can find a way to stick a pill in an instant message as easily as we do those hideous little faces :), and also find a way to install a computer in the home of every elderly and disabled person, and teach all of them to use electronics and to download their daily doses, we might just have a solution. Ding! You’ve got painkillers!

2. Replace postmen with cardboard lookalikes. This will satisfy the carnivorous urges of every yippy Chihuahua and terrier out there who’s eager to rip a chunk from their local letter carrier’s leg, and will also be a huge boost to the cardboard industry.

3. Find another way of saying “Going Postal.” If we trash the Post Office, we will no longer be able to use this treasured saying, which means to have a meltdown or go on a violent rampage. I propose the following celebrity alternatives: “going Mike Tyson,” “going Mel Gibson” or “going Gary Coleman.”

4. Never go out to eat again. This way you can hoard your extra cash, so that when you do have to send a letter, you can mail it by FedEx or UPS, who charge as much as $15 to $20 per ordinary letter, versus the tiny $0.44 the Postal Service charges per stamp.

5. Don’t. The Postal Service handles 563 million pieces of mail per day—almost two pieces for every man, woman and child in this country. It provides a vital service that doesn’t rely on Internet service and doesn’t shirk its duties because of weather (“neither snow nor rain nor heat,” remember?—and to that, my friends, I add hungry Chihuahuas).

I Dream of Dance: A Look into Competitive Performance

Many people don’t consider dance asport. When we think of sports, we think of football, basketball, etc.;however, while it may not officially be considered a sport, dancing can be justas much hard work as running down a field to get a touchdown or sprinting downa court to shoot a basket.

Takeit from Amanda Rentschler, a senior at Lloyd Memorial High School. She’s beendancing for several years now, and it’s no easy task. “I get bruises all thetime. My back’s often sore, but it’s my feet that’ll ache the most.”

Rentschlerstarted dancing when she was four. She continued to dance to the age of sixuntil her mom took her out of dance classes. “My mom told me I had no interestin it, so she pulled me out. These days, I figure I’d be further along in mydancing career if she hadn’t pulled me out then.”

Itwas a while before Rentschler got back into dancing. She took up gymnastics aroundthe age of eight. Shortly after, she became involved in volleyball and socceruntil the 6^th grade. That’s when she decided to join winterguard atthe encouragement of a friend. “Hope [Bradford] washeaded to the first meeting,” she says, “and she asked if I’d join her. Itsounded interesting, so I went.”

Goingto that first winterguard meeting had a huge impact on the direction ofAmanda’s life. She turned out to be a natural at winterguard, which includestwirling flags, rifles, and sabers. There’s also dance involved, which is howshe returned to the path of being a dancer. She stuck with Lloyd’s winterguarduntil the middle of her sophomore year. Then she decided to try out for aprestigious independent guard, O². She made the team, despite beingthe youngest member on the guard at the age of fifteen. She also turned out tobe the best dancer out of all the members and in turn received a dance solo.The team would practice for hours at a time almost every other day. Rentschlerloved her time there, but it was very exhausting work.

For the fall of2010 and the spring of 2011, she was a part of Onyx, a world-class guard that’svery difficult to join. Aside from gaining greater experience, becoming a partof such a prestigious guard has other perks that helped her become a betterdancer. Onyx members have the privilege of taking classes led by well-knowndancers and choreographers.

“Thosewere some of the best dance classes I’ve ever taken,” she recalls.

Fromher time dancing in those two winterguards, she did pick up some injuries. Themost serious ones were an ankle fracture and a broken wrist. But those injuriesweren’t enough to keep her from doing what she loved most. “There wereobviously certain things I couldn’t do as I was healing,” she admits, “but as soonas I got the okay from my doctor, I jumped right back into dancing.”

Rentschlerhas taken both contemporary and ballet classes in recent years. She thinksshe’ll probably attend the University of Kentucky this fall, but she won’t beable to major in dance. It’s only a minor, but she’ll doit anyway and instead major in social work.

Sheis currently looking to apprentice for a modern dance company. It’ll be a lotof hard work, but Rentschler’s up for the challenge. “Dancing is my absolutefavorite thing to do. It’s a way to express your emotions and it’s alsotherapeutic.”

Likeany other sport, dancing is athletic and difficult. It requires grace, grit,focus, and determination. Many people have problems stepping up to thechallenge, but for Amanda Rentschler, dancing is the dream. She hopes that oneday she’ll share her dancing with other people by becoming a professional. “Younever know someone fully,” she says, “unless you’ve seen their self-expressionthrough dance.”

Kingwas a strong leader, a person who believed in peace and justice to win morefreedom for African Americans. We honor his birthday on the third Monday inJanuary.

Dr.King was born on January 15, 1929. Early in his adult life, he became pastor ofthe Dexter AvenueBaptist Churchin Montgomery, AL. He soon became a member of the NAACP andled the bus boycott that ended segregation in public transportation.

From1957-1968, he traveled six million miles and spoke over 25,000 times, with onemassive protest in Birmingham, AL.

College Corner: United States Naval Academy

, an applicant must go through a series of tests, qualifications, and paperwork. Each applicant must take a standardized physical fitness test that consists of push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and running. After those tests are administered by a school coach or a regional blue and gold officer, each applicant must have a physical and an eye examination performed on them, which is paid for by the school. Finally, an applicant must fill out paper work for the school, and a congressman and/or senator for that state or district must nominate the student. There are 4,000 applicants who receive nominations each year, but only 1,500 are accepted to the school.

Those men and women who enter the

Naval

Academy

must attend a boot camp at the school in early July. This six-week period is called Plebe Summer, and is run just like a military boot camp. Plebe summer requires both mental and physical toughness, and can be very hard on those who aren’t used to high stress situations.

The actual school, which pays for everything including tuition, room and board, and other costs, opens up in August. Each student has the ability to pick from 22 majors that range from political science to aerospace engineering. All midshipmen are required to participate in a sport which includes intermural sports, club sports, and Division I NCAA sports. All expenses are paid for, and each student is paid a stipend (a salary, as in a job) every month. Freshmen are paid $100, sophomores are paid $200, and so on.

is an excellent place to attend college. The benefits and rewards from attending the Academy are second to none. It is one of the only colleges in the entire United States that guarantees a student will have no debt upon graduation, and will have a job for at least four years coming out of college.

Salvadore's: A Slice Above the Rest

Any true Erlanger-Elsmere resident has eaten at Salvadore’s Pizza on Dixie Highway. Students at the elementary schools, middle school, and high school flock there after the day is over, or on the weekends, for delicious pizza and sandwiches. But what goes on behind the counters?

I work there along with fellow Lloyd senior Lea Mueller, and juniors Rikki Dressman and Grace Thompson. Mueller says, “It’s a very family-oriented place, people here are down to Earth, and it has good food.”

If you haven’t eaten at Salvadore’s yet, then you should definitely make time to come on down and enjoy it. Many customers especially enjoy the cheesy breadsticks and fries. Or, if you’re considering getting a job, apply there. You’ll find a great workplace, with even greater smells from the ovens.

The Annual Emergence of Debbie Downer

As the winter months come upon us, people often feel a little more depressed and less carefree and exuberant as they had been in the previous summer and spring months. But why?

Scientists don’t have an exact answer to that question. It is thought to be an involvement of genetics, brain chemicals and ions in the air. Some studies have shown that people who are suffering from Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD), or seasonal depression, feel better after significant exposure to sunlight. This makes sense due to the shorter hours of sunlight in the winter.

To fight winter depression, try to enjoy the time of day when the sun is out. Also, think about socializing and exercising as much as possible, and find activities that will get you out of the house and reduce the risk of developing “cabin fever.”

No Fear FAFSA

I’m sure all seniors have heard the term “FAFSA” thrown around quite a few times by now. But what exactly is it? FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It becomes available every year on January 1^st for anyone who will be going to college for that specified year. It’s a form administered by the Department of Education to determine your eligibility for student financial aid. It’s easy to access online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and you must provide certain information, such as your parents’ income. Because of information like this, it’s best to have your parents around as you fill out the FAFSA (or if you’re really lucky they’ll just fill out the whole thing for you!).

Once your FAFSA has been reviewed, you’ll be sent a Student Aid Report (SAR) based on the information you provided. On the FAFSA, you can list the colleges you’re interested in and they’ll also be sent a SAR. Each college has a priority deadline for completing the FAFSA, so make sure you know the deadlines of the colleges you want to go to! After a college gets your SAR, they determine what financial aid you’re eligible for from them and from the government. You’ll then be sent a financial aid package which shows you all the options you have. Finally, you can review the different financial packages from all the colleges who sent you one and decide which one you like best before enrolling.

Narrow Loss for Lady Juggs on the Court

On January 6, 2012, the Lloyd Memorial Lady Juggernauts basketball team took on Louisville Presentation. Shelby Rudd started off the game with a three point shot, followed by a three point shot from Presentation. The Juggernauts led the first quarter with an 11 to 9 run. The second quarter Louisville Presentation roared back and left at half time with a 30 to 21 lead over Lloyd.

The third quarter started slow. “Presentation was a tough team,” said Rudd. “They made big shots when it was necessary.” The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the whole game. Within the last minute of the fourth quarter, both teams were tied. The final score was 58 to 54, Louisville Presentation with the win. The Lady Juggernauts’ leading scorer was Rudd, who had 24 points, including 6 threes. It was a good and close game between both teams, but our opponent pulled through for the win.

Would You Like a Report Card or a Pink Slip? A Look at Merit Pay

With the economy still sore and countries such as China, India and South (but not North!) Korea rocketing ahead of the U.S. in academics, many states are looking for ways to boost test scores and cut costs at the same time. A few, including Florida, are pushing to put a “merit pay” system in place in schools—mostly this means that teachers would be paid according to what grades their students make, and principals would earn money based on their school’s ranking.

The system might sound strange, but because many states are strapped for cash, it could become a reality. In Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana, legislators are putting forth bills that would take away the rights of teachers’ unions (among others) to make deals for salary, working hours and benefits. This would leave teachers unable to have much say in what they make or how their pay is calculated. Some states, mostly with Tea Party governors, believe merit pay will keep teachers on their toes and force them into making their students successful. But is it fair? That was my survey’s subject.

Instead of interviewing students for this poll, I talked to teachers and school staff—after all, it’s their livelihood at stake. 66% of the teachers said no to merit pay; 33% said yes. However, the ones that answered yes said they would only consider supporting merit pay if the plans were fair and well thought-out, rather than a type of teacher-punishment; no one I spoke to felt very positive about a hard-and-fast system of “If Bobby makes an A, I get $50,000 this year; but if Bobby gets an F, I have to hide my car from the repo man and eat SPAM for six months.”

I can definitely see a teacher’s point of view on this—yes, they want their country to succeed, and yes, they want to prove themselves as hard workers, but no, they don’t want their pay determined by somebody who can’t spell contraception, much less use it.

Governors have no business sinking their teeth into education when most of them were mediocre students themselves—even if they did (like a certain former president) go to Yale. Before they get to decide how much teachers get paid, they should have to be a substitute teacher for one week—oh, and they can’t teach gym class, and they’re not allowed to bring duct tape or a Taser with them into the classroom, even if they beg.

I think even having this argument is ridiculous. If Congress banned earmarks (those trusty blocks of fine print that sent Billions-with-a-B to their pet projects every year), then the U.S. would have so much extra money it could double teachers’ salaries, let them keep their unions, and attract new, high-powered college graduates into education, when they would normally look for jobs with higher pay.

But wait! Congress screams. We can’t do that! How will we pay the psychics we use to predict terrorist attacks? How will we research pond algae in Connecticut cemeteries for $6 million? And for the love of God, how will we survive if we don’t have environmentally-sound spoons in the Capitol Hill cafeteria? To them I say, That’s tough. (These examples are all real, by the way). It comes down to the old maxim—You get what you pay for.

Plus, those spoons melt in the chili, anyway.

College Corner: NKU

NKU's new Griffin Hall

Northern Kentucky University, located in Highland Heights, is one of the largest colleges in this region, hosting over 13,000 undergraduates. NKU offers 70 Bachelor degrees, 6 Associates degrees, and 20 Graduate degrees. To gain admission at NKU, your ACT must include at least an 18 in English, a 19 in math, and a 20 in reading. The application fee is $40 to apply online. NKU’s average class size is twenty-four students. NKU’s merit programs include full-ride scholarships, tuition grants and room/board assistance. Other than academics, NKU has several athletic opportunities. They offer 6 sports for men and 8 for women. Compared to schools nationally, NKU is mid-sized, large in scale but personal at the same time. The university recently completed construction on Griffin Hall, a beautiful new computer and science facility whose brilliant lighting brightens the campus each night.

Workin' at Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Working at Five Guys Burgers and Fries is kind of like working at any fast food restaurant, minus the stress. Unlike less fancy places, such as Burger King, McDonald’s, or Wendy’s, which are just a place to eat when you’re in a hurry or don’t have much money, Five Guys is a more sophisticated place to eat. The music is always on loud, which the restaurant is required to do by Jerry Murrell, the man who started the business. He says the booming music brings joy and happiness to the customers. The restaurant draws its name from the five Murrell brothers who started the business, which began as one little store in Arlington, VA, and grew to a worldwide franchise soon after the opening.

A few Lloyd students, including me, Amy Davis, as well as Korina Huntley and Kayla Sawyers, work at Five Guys. It’s good pay and you move up through the ranks pretty quickly, but I’m not saying you should have a career in it. It’s a good job to learn to manage pay checks and save up money you earned yourself. A restaurant doesn’t always offer the best jobs, but you actually make more money than you would at a clothing store like Justice. Personally, though, I’d rather work at a clothing store because it’s not as smelly and you won’t gain a lot of weight from the products you’re around. Also, at fast food restaurants you work more, and late.

The skills you need for the job include good people skills to function around the public and your coworkers. You need to be happy and show the customers they’re welcome even if you aren’t in the best mood; surprisingly, though, the customers often put me in a better mood. If you’re on the register you need to be fast and social so the customers feel comfortable and that you’re treating them like every other person. In the lobby, you need to make sure the tables are always clean for the customers, inviting places to sit and have a meal. On the line, you dress the burger buns with whatever toppings the ticket says. You make the fries and always give extra. Cook the burgers well done so that no customers get pink meat.

Five Guys is a place where the customers are the main priority. Everyone talks about how good the food is and how, if it’s someone’s first time being there, we make sure it’s perfect so they come back and give us repeat business. Our job is to keep our regulars happy, and we succeed.
